An Introduction to the Hills Poly-Print Blog

The purpose of this blog page will be to profile the products that we manufacture, but also to keep you up to date with issues that surround our industry such as the environmental impact of carriers and more general topics to do with manufacturing in the UK.

We will also be following the progress of our two young apprentices, Cara (19) and Aaron (18). Cara has been with us for a few months now and came originally from the job centre for an 8 week work experience placement with nothing but a reference on offer! She made an immediate impact on us all and we offered her an apprenticeship straight away. Aaron has only been with us for a couple of months and asked to join our team after seeing how well Cara had done in a small piece a local paper had written about the success we had had with Cara.

Get Britain Working Scheme

We are part of the Get Britain Working Scheme, and I was really sad to read this article,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17086526

Firstly I must say that I did wonder what we would get from the scheme as looking after a work shy teenager would be more trouble than it is worth, but I am glad to say that that has not been the case at all!

Firstly Cara came to us through the scheme and all she wanted to do was to help us out in the office and get a reference after the 8 weeks, she came in every day with out missing a single day and most importantly she had a smile on her face for the whole time!! Remember, Cara was not receiving any extra money for the work she was doing!

On occasion I had to ask her to help me in the factory and again Cara helped without hesitation and on one of the days I asked her how she felt having to get up for work everyday, Cara's reply surprised me as she said that she really looks forward to coming into work and felt that she had a reason to get up in the morning!

I'm glad to say that we have been able to take Cara on as an apprentice!

We now have Kirsty with us and when the job centre asked to take another placement we said we could probably find work for three weeks only. Kirsty as Cara has not missed a single day and always has a smile on her face, she has worked for us both in the factory and in the office, at the end of the three weeks Kirsty asked if she could stay on for another 5, remember there is no financial incentive for Kirsty to complete the 8 weeks, again we are very impressed with the attitude of both young women that we have had through the scheme.

In the article above people are saying that this scheme exploits young people but I just don't agree at all, We are not forcing them to push a broom around all day, we are giving them valuable experience and a reference to take with them and a reason to get up in the morning. I don't think the so called "youth of today" are work shy, they just need to be given a chance and this scheme at least lets them know that they are capable and worth while!

Apprentices

We have two apprentices, Cara and Aaron. I would like to talk about them both individualy as they have both made such a difference to Hills Poly-Print.

Firstly Cara

We had a phone call from the job centre saying they had a young girl who hadn't had any employment and would like to come to us for an eight week work experience placement. We were not looking to take anyone on but knew that we could find some admin duties for her to do and then (providing she worked well), give her a reference to help her with job applications in the future.

We hear a lot about the younger generation in the UK being work shy and thought maybe Cara would be like that and just go through the motions.... We couldn't have been further from the truth!!

On Cara's first day she arrived on time and was dressed smartly... Good start!! Cara is able to turn her hand to anything in the office and as she is a teenager naturally the IT side of things came easy. Cara has a certain Grantham accent when talking to her with a definite tinge of street.... aaaite, innit.... but the second she picks up the phone Cara talks like the Duchess of Cambridge!

Eight weeks seemed to fly by and such was Cara's work ethic we knew that we couldn't let her go, we have taken Cara on as an apprentice and I have to say she is fantastic, hard working, polite and excellent with customers. Cara attends college one day a week which she enjoys and has been an absolute blessing to Hills Poly-Print.

On occasion I needed help in the factory printing paper bags and Cara has never complained and is able to turn to physical work as readily as she has the office work, and always with a smile on her face.

After a while the job center asked if they could do a little piece in the local paper about the success of Cara which we did and we mentioned that I was looking for an apprentice to help me in the factory, at about 10 am on the morning the paper was published I received a text...........tbc

That is Cara's journey so far and I will continue with Aaron's very soon.

A focus on Mailing Bags

Mailing bags are often the first physical contact your customer has with you as a company!

More and more of us are ordering goods online and there is something exciting about receiving that magic parcel in the post, this is why the the quality of your mailing bags is so important.

I recently ordered a quite expensive laptop bag on line from a well known brand and when it arrived it was delivered in an inside out courier bag..... very disappointed!! Needless to say we have been in contact with that company and let them know that there are low quantity solutions available to them right here in the UK.

You don't have to be a big chain store to be able to afford personalised quality mailing bags, in a huge range of sizes and colours that will suit your image and a range of qualities that will suit your budget.
